Hello everyone!
First of all, thanks so much for subscribing to The Chip Letter. After less than four weeks I’ve seen the number of subscribers grow well beyond my wildest expectations. I love researching and writing these posts and it’s really great to see the newsletter being read by more people than I ever imagined.
But this is only the beginning. So here is a very brief update to share some of the things I have planned over the next few weeks:
A series looking at the origins of RISC including a two-part post on the original Acorn Risc Machine.
The story of Intel’s ‘lost’ early microprocessor - the 4005.
Revisiting the original version of Moore’s Law.
The minicomputer that won a Pulitzer Prize (well almost).
IBM’s attempts to squeeze a mainframe into a PC.
… and more
Plus a series of Chip Letter Links posts with interesting short reading, images and links. If you missed them the first two are here and here.
If you think any friends or colleagues might enjoy any of this then please share!
I’d also like your help. I’ve got a long list of architectures to research and post on. So here’s a poll. Which of these three options to cover first?
If you have any other suggestions then please add them in the comments.
A big thank you to everyone who has recommended The Chip Letter. Especially to Dylan Patel of the awesome SemiAnalysis newsletter who has generously featured us amongst his recommendations. Thanks Dylan! All his posts are great, but I particularly enjoyed his recent post on SiFive and the growing importance of RISC-V.
Finally, two bonus posts which I’ve placed online but not in your inbox, so as not to clutter it too much.
The first is on the Intel 8087. It’s as much a tribute to the work of Ken Shirriff as anything.
The second is on my decision to use Substack and my experiences in my first few weeks in using the platform. It’s probably most of interest if you’re thinking of using Substack. TLDR is Substack has solved my procrastination so far!
If you’re on Twitter then please head over and say hello. Have a great weekend everyone!
